Sports. When it comes down to it, I am a purist by nature. I am also very blunt and honest. This is where you get to see an old school fan's opinions on the way things are today, in an unashamed, honest format. But hey, I don't like talking to myself so I want your thoughts on all this stuff as well

Ahh what a wonderful weekend...the Major League Baseball playoffs got into full swing (no pun intended).

Boston finally broke the legendary "Curse of the Bambino" last yer when they won the World Series for the first time in 86 years last year. Unfortunately they could not break the curse of "El Duque" Orlando Hernandez and were swept. The St Louis Cardinals showed why they are the best team in the National League, sweeping the horribly overmatched San Diego Padres in 3 games. Houston ousted Atlanta by winning the longest postseason game in Major League history in 18 innings, extending the Braves fans longsuffering to 11 years since their last and thus far only title. The Yankees and Angels wanted to play some more and are the only series to go the full 5 game distance.

In other news...

STRIKE UP THE BRASS BONANZA! HOCKEY IS BACK! The NHL (National Hockey League) returned this past weekend with every team in action. Scoring is up already and fans seem to be willing to forgive the league for stupidly cancelling the season because they could not come to any agreement

THE CHASE IS ON. Mark Martin won his 32nd career race at Kansas Speedway yesterday, but Tony Stewart continues to lead the Chase for the Nextel Cup. This playoff system in NASCAR has been a real boost to the sports already booming popularity.

THE BEAT GOES ON. The University of Southern California won 42-21 over Arizona over the weekend and was ranked number 1 for the 25th consecutive week. Of course, in about a month the first Bowl Championship Series rankings come out and the talk of a playoff system will begin anew.
